BANDAR SUNWAY - Last Wednesday, the Taylor’s Music club organized an open mic night at lecture theatre 22. There were a total of 10 acts that performed on that night along with a featured band that was called from outside the university.
The open mic night is actually a monthly event that the Music Club organizes. Students are welcome to attend this event, with an entry fee of rm5 per person.

Among the 10 acts, there were newcomers as well as those who have performed for previous open mic nights. One newcomer, Ikram shared with us his first-time experience playing at the open mic night, “I was so nervous, I almost wanted to pull out of the whole thing, but I went through with it” he said, adding that he took it as a learning experience. “Hopefully I’ll do better at the next one,” he said.
Axam Maumoon, an organizing member of the Taylor’s Music Club stated that the purpose of this open mic night is to bring the musicians of Taylor’s University together so that there is room for collaboration, as well as providing a space for aspiring musicians at the school to experience the act of performing in front of a crowd, even if it’s just your own friends.

The atmoshpere during open mic night --
“The open mic night we have here every month is to give people who are new to performing a sort of practice space so that they can overcome their fear of performing in public.” “Many aspiring musicians suffer from stage-fright, I know I did when I was just starting out, so this event is an opportunity for them to get that experience, and to get that exposure, enough so to overcome that fear.” Said Axam.
The featured act of the night was the Maha Jeffery Band, who is not from Taylor’s University, but has strong ties to some of the members of the Music Club. When asked about what it is like to perform at a university campus instead of a bar or a concert, the front man of the band, Maha said this: “it’s a bit different from my regular gigs, but I enjoyed it just the same.” “The open mic night at Taylor’s really allows me to be more casual and candid when I perform, I guess because it’s a more casual setting.”
Many of the audience members that night enjoyed the show. “It was great! I got to see some of my good friends perform up there,” said Irwin Lim, who is an ADP student here at Taylor’s. Irwin never misses an open mic night, and attends it every month.
So, if you are ever in the mood to perform, or just want to have a good time with your friends, try checking out the open mic night at Taylor’s, there are good people to be met and wonderful music to be heard.
